Computational Chemistry- Instructor: William Kennerly

  • Computational Chemistry: A hands-on survey of computational chemistry methods. Students will learn the concepts that enable computational chemistry as well as how to appropriately use them to model chemistry. Molecules and reactions from organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, and biochemistry will be studied. Students will learn how to use software using quantum chemical and molecular dynamics methods. Prerequisites: PY140 General Physics 2 and CH222 Organic Chemistry 2 or Permission of Instructor.  3 credits.

CH 351C Special Topics In Chemistry  
Structural Biochemistry- Instructor: Madushi Raththagala

  • Structural biochemistry is an interdisciplinary area that integrates biology, chemistry, and physics concepts to study biological macromolecules. This course mainly focuses on understanding the structures of proteins at the molecular level. It provides a rigorous introduction to protein structure and function, highlighting modern developments, foundational biophysical concepts, and historical perspectives where applicable. The course will cover various structural biology and biophysical chemistry techniques, including spectroscopic methods, mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography, NMR, and Cryo-EM. However, the main focus of the course will be on practical and problem-solving aspects of protein structural biochemistry, emphasizing how these experimental techniques can advance our understanding of proteins and how specific biological problems are solved at the molecular level. 3 credits.

CH 351C Special Topics In Chemistry  
Advanced Synthetic Methods- Instructor: Jessada Mahatthananchai

  • A survey of the advanced synthetic methodologies and mechanistic theories of organic chemistry. Each week will cover a topic, which may include catalysis, physical organic chemistry and asymmetric syntheses. This course is suitable for those interested in pursuing graduate study in synthetic chemistry. It does not count as 300-level elective for the major. 1 credit.
